Penny Wars at TSA for the Orphans of Our Own Home in Africa
|
In chapel today, Mrs. Foxworth,
along with our Lower School Student council, shared an idea of how Tattnall
students could help the children of Our Own Home orphange in
Uganda. Starting Monday, Jan. 14 through Friday, Jan. 18, our elementary
classes will have an all out PENNY WAR! Each class will have a jar to fill full
of pennies in competition with the other homerooms. There is a catch....you
bring pennies to count points for your homeroom, BUT you can bring anything
higher than a penny to place in another homeroom's jar and it will be DEDUCTED
from that class's total! Sounds fun, huh? So let's shake our piggy banks and
bring in our change so we can make a change in the lives of these orphans!

Kudos to our 5th graders!
A big congratulations goes to Dawson Brown, the winner of our 14th annual TSA Geography Bee, held Tuesday, January 8th. Dawson participated along with fellow 5th grader, Casey Richardson, and 8 other 4th through 8th grade students. Runner-up was eighth grader Thomas Humphries. Wow! What an accomplishment for both students!

What does research say about ways parents can help their children with reading?
You will find your child's STAR Reader evaluation in Monday folders today. Research shows that children who read on or above grade level succeed in school. The reading level on the report will be highlighted; for example, if your child scored a 5.6, this number would be equivalent to 5th grade/6th month reading ability. If your child is not reading at or above grade level, you may find these research based suggestions beneficial to boost his or her reading level.
- Provide a good role model — read yourself and read often to your child.
- Provide varied reading material — some for reading enjoyment and some with information about hobbies and interests.
- Encourage activities that require reading — for example, cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite (reading directions), or identifying an interesting bird's nest or a shell collected at the beach (using a reference book).
- Establish a reading time, even if it is only ten minutes a day.
- Write notes to your school-age child; encourage written responses.
- Ask your child to bring a library book home to read to a younger sibling.
- Establish one evening a week for reading (instead of television viewing).
- Encourage your child in all reading efforts.

A Fresh Start To The New Year!
Welcome back! We are glad to have you all back here and ready for a great 2013! We have flip flopped our daily schedule to allow Mrs. Green's class to have reading and language arts in the morning and Mrs. Hinson's class to have math and history in the morning as well. We hope the kids will be excited about the change!
